History
In 1848, the Hancock Land Company legacy began with the purchase of a 400-acre timber stand in Casco, Maine. At the outset, trees were harvested and hauled to the Crooked River and driven onto Sebago Lake for sale throughout southern Maine. In the 1880’s lumber manufacturing became an integral part of the business. Portable mills powered by steam engines were established and traveled to harvest sites. The Hancock family of businesses, including both Hancock Land and Hancock Lumber Companies (www.hancocklumber.com), became and remain today the largest harvester and seller of timber in southern and southwestern Maine, the world’s largest manufacturer of Eastern White Pine boards, and northern New England’s largest independent retail lumber dealer.

Today, the Hancock Land Company team vigorously promote a critical mass of multiple-use native forest systems on more than 30,000 acres of forest in Southern and Western Maine. The careful and productive management of the forest has long been the foundation for Maine’s economy and continues to be an essential resource for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Hancock Land Company employs high environmental standards, prioritizing native biological diversity and other ecological considerations.

Each of the six Hancock generations has left distinguishing marks on the company and on the timber industry.

Our Legacy of Stewardship "Each of us has an obligation to leave the company in better shape than when we found it" -David Hancock

bullet Sumner Hancock (President 1900–1934) significantly increased the timberland base and introduced the two-man crosscut saw, which increased production to "at least 2,000 board feet of lumber daily" allowing loggers to cut trees closer to the ground.
bullet Milton Sumner Hancock (President 1934–1944) left his mark by leading the company through the depression, and as legend suggests kept up to 300 men employed through those tough years.
bullet Dave Hancock (President 1976-1992) guided a remarkable growth period along with a shareholder repurchase plan, thus bringing company shares back into his immediate family and helping to ensure future generational succession.
